RoTW: Willow Retreat, $150-$300/night

willow rental

We love it when our readers let us know about their rental properties, especially when those properties are like this woodsy, romantic retreat in Willow. Located about 15 minutes from Woodstock, the house is a unique contemporary three-story design with decks and bridges. As nice as the house is, the property’s biggest draw is its incredible surroundings, which include a rushing stream and lots of pine trees. It’s also bordered on either side by the Catskills and converging streams, according to the listing. The owner aptly named the property Rushing Water Haven, which suits it perfectly. Looks like an ideal romantic getaway to us. The house is booked solid through the end of August, but dates start to open up in September and October, just in time for fall foliage.

Friday Fancy: Willow Solar on 183 acres, $2,550,000

Hankering to live completely off the grid? For the rock-bottom price of just $2.5 million, you could do just exactly that in this completely solar-powered house on nearly 200 acres in Willow (Ulster County). It’s not dazzling on the outside, but the inside is something to behold. So…Behold!

The house’s surroundings are as gorgeous as you’d expect: Rolling meadows, tons of forests, views, streams. Looks like there are a couple of solar-powered guest houses/outbuildings, too.

So what are we thinking? Spiritual retreat? Yoga center? Commune? Or simply a place to go and live in Hermann Hesse-like isolation while you sit and count your billions of the dollars? Which would you choose? We’re going with that last one.

UPSTATE JANE: Get To Know a Local Realtor

Megan Oldenburger, aka Upstate Jane, is the owner of Dichotomy Interiors, an Interior Design and Style firm based in Woodstock, NY. She writes for Upstater about design, home furnishings, real estate and culture.
Through the years I have discovered that one of the most important things about working with a real estate agent is making sure he or she is someone you want to spend time with. My first Q&A with a local realtor is the agent I have used for my last two purchases, and also an adorable woman I now go to trivia night with, have over for movies, and go see bands with.

Name: Joan Capria
Company: Westwood Metes & Bounds Realty Ltd
Town: Woodstock

Age: Old enough!

Hometown: NYC

How long have you lived in Woodstock: 15 years in the same house (I bought the house I was renting after looking at many houses)

How long have you been doing real estate: 9 years as a top producing agent in UC earning my ABR (Accredited Buyers Representative, CRS Certified Residential Specialist, Luxury Home Marketing and Green designations)

Why did you decide to become an agent: I can’t tell you because I’m a secret agent

What is your favorite thing about working with buyers: Getting to know them, being part of that moment when they find the “one.”

What are some things that can help buyers be better clients:

1. Defining & articulating their wants & needs

2. Asking questions

3. Asking for help

4. Working with an agent they trust

5. Being able to make me laugh and keeping a sense of humor Read the rest of this entry »
