Anybody Want a Decommissioned Prison?

Mid-Orange Correctional Facility - For Sale!

If you’ve ever fancied transforming an old Greybar Hotel into an ACTUAL hotel (or theatre, or gallery space, or apartment complex), you can now do just exactly that. According to a recent MSN Money article, NYS budgetary crises are forcing the state to put its cadre of old prisons on the auction block, and now you can get a piece of the action. The article lists what’s up for grabs, including the Mid-Orange Correctional Facility, the Buffalo Correctional Facility, and the Hoosick Falls Armory.

Speaking of armories, check out the New York State Surplus real estate page. It’s got an armory in Poughkeepsie up for auction that is truly drool-worthy. Minimum bid starts at a dirt-cheap $50,000. Other cool properties listed, too. Click on the picture below to see the brochure.

Rental of the Week: Lakefront House in Warwick, $5,500/week

We’re really digging this fancy rental properties right on the shores of Greenwood Lake, located east of the town of Warwick in Orange County. It ain’t cheap, but we can see why. First of all, there’s the gigantic, imposing 40-foot-high wall of windows facing the lake. Then there’s the wrap-around terraces, the gourmet kitchen, and the stainless steel tub in the master bath. Now raise your hand if you suddenly want a stainless steel tub in your own house.

Greenwood Lake is located less than an hour from the city, just north of the New Jersey state line. The lake is also bordered to the northeast by the village of Greenwood Lake, a cute, walkable lakeside town with lots shops, restaurants, and a public beach. Minimum one-week stay is required. Which is probably for the best, because we can’t really imagine staying in a house like this for just one night. It seems like we’d need some time to just stare up at one of the giant walls of windows with our mouths hanging open.

Victorian in Warwick, $173,000

You can get a lot in Warwick if your price range is around $300,000. That appears to be the range where the houses get a lot more interesting (in other words, less McMansions and more old Victorian or Colonial houses with lots of character).  But not much in the $100s, unfortunately. There are a couple, however, and we wanted to close out the week with something that was 1) right in the village; 2) under $200,000; and 3) had a lower tax rate (comparatively); 4) not scary and somewhat easy on the eyes, of course.

No easy feat in Warwick. And yet, it seems this one might fit the bill. It looks nice on the inside and outside, and it’s in an attractive neighborhood. Walking distance to village, too.

Listing says that the kitchen has been updated, but there’s no picture provided. Make of that what you will.

For Rent: The Warwick Barn

We came across this cool property last year: an 18th century post-and-beam farmhouse for rent by the night, weekend or week. We’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.

One note: you’re renting half the barn. The family that owns it uses the other half as their country house, and may or may not be around.
