Stamford Contemporary, $199,900

2071 tower mtn rd stamford ny

Since we’re doing rentals all week, we decided to use our usual Tuesday RoTW spot to feature a property that we think could make a nice little home away from home. And up in Delaware County, you can get a whole lotta drama (as far as views are concerned) for less than $200,000 with this contemporary hillside cottage. With design elements inspired by Lloyd Wright, the cottage is a gem located on 2.5 acres near a gem of a village, Stamford. The living room and the sweeping views from it are almost worth the listing price alone. By the way, we noticed recently that Trulia has started posting GreatSchools.com district ratings on all of their posts, and the Stamford Central School district “exceeds standard.” Good to know.

Five-Figure Friday: Off-the-Grid in Harpersfield, $55,000

star rd harpersfield ny

The town of Harperfield is up in northern Delaware County. Listings claims a view of Utsayantha Mountain near Stamford, but make no mistake: This is rustic living completely off-grid. The property includes the tiny cabin depicted above, an outhouse, generator, wood stove, storage shed, and a 1974 Fan Line camper (which we’re calling the guest house). It also includes a tree stand for hunting, not to mention a fully-stocked pond for fishing. Definitely seems like an nature lover’s dream getaway. The lot size is substantial, nearly 17 acres, but it’s only 8 minutes from Stamford and 10 minutes from Harpersfield. We’re a little bit in love.

The Westholm Hotel in Stamford, $88,100

westholm hotel stamford ny

Pardon us for deviating from the norm a bit today, but this is just too good not to share. In the midst of our search for the usual Wednesday Car-Free Upstate post, we came across this crumbling hotel in the village of Stamford, Delaware County. The Westholm Hotel was built around 1880, and during its glory days, the hotel’s 40 rooms were occupied by enthusiastic vacationers looking to break free of crowded, dirty, and hot NYC in favor of the bucolic Catskill Mountains. The Westholm was one of the finest around, known not only for its for fine dining and a cabaret with dancing but its unique lobby murals by Stamford artist LaMont Warner, which depicted in vibrant pastels the area’s natural environment. The Westholm remained in operation as a popular Borscht Belt destination until the 1990s when it was shuddered for good. As you can see by the photos, it’s in a state of disrepair, and current owners Deb and Tony Dianich are looking to pass this property onto a buyer who will transform it.

Five-Figure Friday: Stamford As-Is, $59,900

135 w main street stamford ny

It looks rough on the outside and is being marketed “As-Is”, but the inside isn’t half-bad. It clearly needs work all around, but it’s got a big kitchen and tons of built-ins. The square footage puts the house squarely in the “rambling farmhouse” category, but the lot size is only a quarter-acre. It’s located in the middle of the village of Stamford, which is in Delaware County, walking distance to schools, stores, and other conveniences. This could be a stunning house with some elbow grease. Listings states that verification of finances is required as well as a 10% deposit.
