Shandaken Contemporary on 36 Acres, $549,000

544 herdman road shandaken ny

The town of Shandaken in northern Ulster County is the perfect place to find seclusion. This property caught our eye because we love the red exterior situated amongst the greenery of the 36 acre lot upon which it is located. We also like that tidy landscaping, the pond, and the deck overlooking the garden. Inside, it’s clean, unfussy, and spacious (no need for overdecorating when you’ve got windows bringing the outside in). The funky wood stove is a fun and unique focal point in the living room. The property is located just south of the hamlet of Shandaken (not much there unless you need fishing tackle or a U-Haul truck), about 6 miles northwest of Phoenicia, and 32 miles north of Kingston.

Friday Fancy: Mountain Estate in Mt. Tremper, $2.5 million

As we were looking around Phoenicia this week, we found ourselves wandering around the outskirts in places like Mt. Tremper, which doesn’t have a lot for sale, but what we found was nice. Like this doozy right here. Located on 155 acres, seclusion is guaranteed. And so is the striking view. Definitely everything you need here to never leave: Movie theatre, game room, workout room, gorgeous modern design, 10,000 square feet, 7 bedroom, and the prettiest setting around. Whew!

Beds: 7

Baths: 5.5

Square Feet: 10,000

Taxes: Unknown, but probably a lot

Shandaken Short Sale, $100,000

Do you love it, or do you, um, not love it? This popped up in our inbox and we have to admit it piqued our curiosity, maybe in a so-bad-it’s good way. It’s sort of a post-modern take on Tudor half-timbering, and since we can’t see the inside, we can imagine someone really playing up the 60s thing and making the most of some fake knotty pine paneling.

Some stuff to recommend it: Esopus Creek-front, four acres, three beds and three baths, coming in at 1,742 square feet. Less commendable: it’s on Route 28, and bears this description: “bank will make decision on acceptable offering price. Reduced price reflects needed work & maintenance, inside and out.” We’re pretty sure that it will indeed be five figures when all is said and done.

Rental of the Week: Mount Tremper Retreat, $1150/week

Imagine a place where you can sit in silence on the screened-in porch while the wind whispers through the trees, a place where you can relax by soaking in the deep claw-foot tub, or by chanting “aum” in the meditation room. Now, imagine that you could get to this place without your car.

You can do all of these things here at this 1,100-sq. ft. retreat in Mount Tremper, which popped up in our listings section. There’s a Trailways bus stop a quarter-mile away, the UCAT local bus takes you to nearby places like Kingston or Woodstock, and you can walk to Hanover Farm for groceries, just a mile away. The property is surrounded by gorgeous stream and forest views.

Property is convenient to Belleayre Mountain, Phoenicia, Catskill Preserve hiking trails, swimming in the Beaverkill Creek and more swimming at Colgate Lake, but you’ll need your car for those trips. Meditation room doubles are a guest bedroom. The rental goes for $175 per night or $1150 per week. Contact shokoshoju@gmail.com for availability, and be prepared to provide references.

Check it out here. Poke around and look at houses for sale and more rental properties, too.
