Commutable: Middletown Mid-Century Modern

We feel pretty certain that you could make this place amazing. Take out that carpet. Do a little something with the half-moon of Formica-topped kitchen counter and perhaps upgrade the wood paneling and, voila: Don Draper’s new headquarters. Keep those nifty closets and their sputnik-y knobs, though.

Middletown is on the Port Jervis line of MetroNorth. You’re walking distance to the full-of-potential (admittedly not yet met) downtown, but have over an acre of land. Yes, a tad suburban, but leafy enough to ride the line. The place is palatial: five beds, three baths, 4,284 square feet. It has a finished basement, both a living and a family room, and an in-ground pool, which will cause your city friends to flock to you come summer.

Grand Opening of Polonia Towers, Middletown

When: Thursday,  10, 2012 at 12 pm
Where: 26 North Street, Downtown Middletown, NY 10940

Polonia Towers, a former bank and office building has been restored by Polonia Architectural Restoration. It’s in the heart of downtown Middletown Business District. This building will have commercial and residential space. The commercial space consists of a restaurant and tapas bar/club lounge, and 8 luxury apartments. These apartments are aimed at high income residents with features such as stainless steel appliances, washers and dryers, under-mounted sinks, hardwood floors, Caesar stone counter tops, bidets, and Jacuzzi bathtubs.

It’s great that Middletown gets a prominent building back, with the aim of promoting a renaissance. If you are from Middletown, what’s your take on the impact the restoration of this building will have on the area? Polonia owns quite a few buildings upstate. It would be great to see a repetition in other towns.

Fixer Upper of the Week: 1800s Middletown Farm House, $69,900

Certainly pretty on the outside, right? This farm house in Middletown, NY has one drawback as far as we can see: a small lot. The rest sounds pretty good for the price: “The home has three beds, 1.5 baths, family room and living room both with woodstoves, and a dining room with a small fireplace. There is a detached two story barn that is used as a garage, deck, covered front porch, and small storage shed. The home does need significant repairs and updating, so a purchase will require cash or a rehab loan.” A chance to fit your dream kitchen into what’s otherwise a pretty nice place to start.

UPSTATE JANE: Mid-Century Modern Home in Middletown- 289K

Hey all you MCM buffs. There is a diamond in Middletown right now for 289K. Plucked from our own listings here on Upstater, this is a three-bedroom, three-bathroom home with an attached garage. With large open windowed spaces and an exposed basement for extra square footage, you don’t have to just love MCM architecture to be impressed with this home. Modest from the front, this home has some serious visual impact awaiting you inside and from the back (see above).

The house has been renovated recently, and although the taste may sway more masculine than feminine to some, it is move-in ready nonetheless. The beamed vaulted ceilings opening out onto a balcony deck are just a few of it’s great features. It is in an established neighborhood near a park, and seems like it would make a great full-time family home for those looking to make the jump from city to suburbia/country life. Convenience, plus the bonus of Orange County school district, which is noted as one of the best in New York, should all be appealing to young families. I see major potential here, and if I hadn’t just took the plunge in Woodstock I would be booking an appointment to view this property. For the full listing, click here.
