This is the weekend to shore up your plans to visit the Catskills. The leaf colors are at peak right now, which means stunning vistas abound at every turn up here in the mountains. Need an excuse to get up here? Feeling in the Halloween spirit? We found a couple of family-friendly spooky events happening in the land of Sullivan County this weekend. Come early in the day, wander through the pretty scenery, and then get ready to meet some ghosts (and maybe learn a little local history, too) when the sun goes down.

UPSTATE JANE: 5 bedroom in Hurleyville for 159K

Megan Oldenburger, aka Upstate Jane, is the owner of Dichotomy Interiors, an Interior Design and Style firm based in Woodstock, NY. She writes for Upstater about design, home furnishings, real estate and culture.

While searching for FSBO listings, This home in Hurleyville, NY popped up on craigslist pointing to the owners blog where the home is listed at 159K. On the blog he lists the MLS/Realtors information and the price bumps to 164K, but Realtor.com has it at 159K, so I am guessing the agent just hasn’t updated her website. Regardless, this seems like a great home for a family as a full-time OR weekend retreat. Hovering around the 2 hour marker from NYC, Hurleyville is a small town in Sullivan county about 15 minutes from Monticello. The owners have done a great job decorating this space and showing off the homes potential. It seems that the kitchen and baths have been semi-updated but there are still areas to increase the homes value and put your own stamp on it.

The full listing is here

The link to the owners blog is here

Catskill CENTERpieces: Art, Education and Restoration in Hurleyville

We stumbled across this site some time ago, during our continual search for information on restoring bungalow colonies in Sullivan County.

Artists Julie Courtney and Jennie Shanker were also interested in the plight of these old places, but rather than renovate bungalows, they decided to make sculpture out of them. The result is CENTERpieces, a collaboration between the artists, acting as curators, and the Hurleyville-based Center for Discovery, a nonprofit that provides educational, environmental and creative arts services for children and adults with disabilities.

The buildings on and adjacent to the Center’s land were beyond saving, but by reinventing them as installation art, Shanker and Courtney could help this struggling community to become an arts destination. “Hurleyville is in this cultural path of DIA:Beacon and Storm King, and we thought we could do some smaller scale version of those,” they told Upstater.

So a pair of identical 20-foot-high geodesic domes are now the setting for a camera obscura installation by the artist Richard Torchia, called The Harris Observatory. And the bungalows will eventually be altered and reconfigured by the architect and artist Allan Wexler.

The opening for the Harris Observatory is Saturday, February 25th. The installation will be open to visitors by appointment from February 18 through March 3.
