RoTW: East Jewett Chalet, $1,000/week

route 23c east jewett ny

Cozy, bright, tidy, and calming, this A-Frame chalet in the hamlet of East Jewett in Greene County looks like the idea getaway to us. The location is great if you’re looking for a private spot to stay while you hit the slopes on Hunter Mountain or Windham, explore some hiking trails like Kaaterskill Falls, or hit nearby towns like Tannersville, Palenville, or Saugerties. The rental is available for any season, and the wood burning stove looks like it will keep guests toast in the wintertime while they watch the snow fall through the chalet’s large windows. According to the listing, the kitchen is well-stocked and there’s a gas grill for some outdoor dining and entertaining on the deck. Minimum stay is 2 nights at $200/night, $1,000/week, or $2,000/month.

If you find yourself enamored with this place so much that you can’t bear to part with it, it’s currently for sale with a listing price of $198,000. Here’s a link to the official listing.

From the Classifieds: East Jewett Chalet, $200/night

Mmm, pretty nice summer getaway, wouldn’t you say? Three beds, in the mountains in Greene County, close to a semi-private lake, for 200 smackeroos a night. We think the furnishings are adorable, too. And the owners say they’ll help you personalize your stay. Like thrift shopping? Locavore eating? Hawk-watching? Sounds like they’ll tell you where and when to do this stuff.

You can post your listings for free in the Classifieds section, too!

Hurricane Irene in Greene County, East Jewett Update

Update! Lisa reported much of this, but I just wanted to pass on that 23C in East Jewett/Tannersville/Onteora Park is passable and made it out of the storm in relatively good condition. (I know that’s a main drag for many of you, so y’all can rest assured.) Electricity is slowly coming back, too. Much of East Jewett and Jewett had their electricity restored yesterday. We just got ours restored twenty minutes ago. If you’ve emailed me about your house and wanted me to check on it, and I didn’t get back to you, just email me again: upstaterblog@gmail.com. I’ve had a lot of incoming to keep track of, with spotty email service.

Sort of. We plan to keep you as updated as possible about the effects of Hurricane Irene in Greene County, which has been very hard hit. I’m writing from NYC, where I’ve been trying to get on-the-ground reports from my East Jewett neighbors, but because of downed power lines and the cuts to electricity, Jewett and East Jewett remain unreachable.

We did speak to someone at Bottini Fuel, our oil servicer, who let us know that Route 23c, the main drag through Jewett and Onteora, is currently impassable and yes, electricity is still out. Much of the NY State Thruway south of Albany remains closed. For specifics on Thruway closures, click here. For details on other road closures, try here.

Let us know in the comment section if you have any on-the-ground reports of Irene damage in the Catskills. And if you have a second home Upstate that you can’t reach, what do you plan to do?

Catskills Fixer-Upper Close to Colgate Lake for $140,000

I’ve had my eye on this East Jewett house for a while. It’s right down the road from my own, en route to the secluded, never-crowded mountain lake where we swim. It’s a cute if modest farmhouse from the outside, with a nice wrap around porch. There are no photos of the inside, and the broker says, at this point, there’s “not much to see.” It’s currently crowded with the owners’ stuff, and the broker admits the interior and the foundation will need work. The property is listed as in fair condition.

I’m a little biased, but I think this is a nice location at the price. Rte 23c is a winding mountain road with lovely country views, and the house really is a stone’s throw (well, a quick bike ride) from Colgate Lake. East Jewett doesn’t have any sort of town center—or particularly good road paving—but this house is about an 8 minute drive from Tannersville and close to Hunter and Windham as well. It’s been on the market forever, and the broker indicated that the owners are eager to sell. You could probably get this for an even better deal.
