The Shamrock House, Alive and Well

Earlier this week, we got a link in our inbox to a story that the Shamrock House in East Durham had filed for bankruptcy. Well, it did, but that was back in 2009. Since then, we’ve discovered, the place was purchased and renovated by a couple, and business is booming. They wrote in to tell us this:

“We are incorporated under the name Mushy, Inc. DBA The Shamrock House… The business we purchased operated under the name Shamrock House Inc. and did in fact file for bankruptcy protection in June 2009. After 73 years of operation we felt we should keep the name as close as possible to the original so we added “The” to the Shamrock House name to differentiate ourselves from the previous owners.  We have been doing fantastic business wise and have continued the Irish Heritage the Kellegher Family as well as the entire Town of East Durham nutures and loves so well ever since taking over in January 2010. ”

So, rejoice, upstaters. And go visit.

Deal: Water Park + B&B in Greene County

Here’s a pretty good deal if you’re looking for some water park action and a country getaway: a Living Social coupon for the Zoom Flume water park and Gavin’s Irish Country Inn in East Durham (this area of the northern Catskills is a sort of Irish version of the former Borscht Belt).

Here are the options:

  • A One-Night Stay ($189) for Two Adults and Two Children in a Standard Country View Room, Sundays through Thursdays
  • Or, a Two-Night Stay ($489) for Two Adults and Two Children in a Standard Country View Room, Fridays and Saturdays
  • Daily Breakfast and Dinner for Each Guest
  • Four Admissions to Zoom Flume Water Park
  • Combine Unlimited Vouchers for an Extended Stay

Note the last part, unlimited vouchers: Instead of buying a country house, you could buy endless amounts of vouchers and stay forever. We haven’t been to Gavin’s. Anyone have a review?

East Durham Restaurant/Bar/Inn For Sale, $230,000

Don’t judge this roadside spot by its tattered sign. There’s lots of potential here. According to the listing, Furlong’s is a landmark in East Durham and has been around for quite some time. Although it looks like it could use some sprucing up, the price is right at less than $250,000.

What does it get you? In addition to a restaurant and bar, Furlongs also comes with twelve motel units, plus an extra living space for the owner or caretaker/manager. It’s also right on a stream and in a prime location on Route 145.

The kitchen area looks great. However, the dining room and bar need some attention. Right now, they look pretty gloomy and cave-like, and those vinyl tablecloths certainly aren’t doing it any favors. But it doesn’t appear to be anything that someone with an eye for restaurant and bar design couldn’t fix (where’s that British guy from Food Network’s Restaurant: Impossible when you need him?).

East Durham is a cute little resort town in Greene County. Windham Mountain is nearby, plus Saugerties and Woodstock to the south. There are great opportunities for tourist traffic, plus the added bonus of residential side streets off 145 where Furlongs could become the neighborhood regular. If you’re considering a move and you looking to start a business, this might be a decent investment.

East Durham Contemporary, $219,900

If you’re going to build your house in an area like the foothills of the Catskill Mountains, you might as well feature giant picture windows that offer an amazing view of the valley. And while this contemporary house in East Durham might not fetch any design awards, it certainly has a commendable view.

The house itself is less 1,000 square feet, but what it lacks in square feet it makes up for in yard: 33 acres of it.

It has an open floor plan, with a small but functional kitchen (the electric stove and green Formica won’t be for everyone) and a spiral staircase leading up to a loft with a bedroom. There’s a also a walk-out basement and garage. Big windows are everywhere, including the dining room area, making it bright throughout.

It’s set far enough back far off of Allen Teator Road for a lot of privacy. It’s close to Windham Mountain skiing and the hamlet of East Durham, and about 6 miles from Zoom Flume Water Park.

677 Allen Teator Road, East Durham (Anne Lafferty Realty/Kathryn Lawyer) GMAP
