Car-Free Upstate: Dover Plains Colonial, $339,999

29 reimer avenue dover plains ny

The listing does not lie: This is, indeed, a great commuter location. Dover Plains is in Dutchess County, and this circa-1930 Colonial is five minutes away on foot from the Metro North station. It’s simple and sweet, but that finished 1,000 square foot attic space is what ultimately cinched the deal for us. Lot size is small, but the yard is big enough to accommodate a small garden and a play area for the kiddies. Includes a detached two-car garage. If this one’s too pricy for you, here’s a nearby neighbor that’s cheaper (and smaller).

Car-Free Country House: Greek Revival in Dover Plains, $395,000

There seems to be a lot of ambivalence with Greek Revivals. But love it or hate it, there’s a lot going for this one in the eastern Dutchess County hamlet of Dover Plains; most notably, it’s ginormous size of over 6,000 square feet. And at $63/square foot, this is a pretty good deal. Alas, it needs work, the extent of which is tough to tell from some blurry pictures. But it also includes a guest house and three additional outbuildings (one of which is a chapel), all on 3 acres. It’s located about 2 miles from the center of Dover Plains and the Metro-North station there. The Tenmile Metro-North station in Amenia is also about 2 miles away, and both stations are cabable. And look at this adorable wee Greek Revival structure on the property! It’s like a little Mini-Me!

Car-Free Country House: Dover Plains European Colonial, $329,000

The three peaks on this house are what caught our eyes while we scanned the Metro-North Harlem Line-accessible town of Dover Plains for properties. And then we discovered that it’s on four acres with a stream-fed pond and one and a half miles from the train station, making it our pick for this week’s Car Free Country House.

Dover Plains is a small hamlet in eastern Dutchess County, about 30 minutes from Poughkeepsie and the Hudson River, and not far from the Connecticut border. 148 Cart Road is within walking or biking distance to Dover Elementary School, a grocery store, pharmacies, restaurants and a wine shop in Dover Plains proper.

The inside is a roomy 2,900 square feet, and the interior looks nice and bright, although we might consider changing the wall color in the kitchen to something less….salmon-y. The additional laundry room space is handy.

Cart Road is a country road, and this house is set far enough off of it that even the modest road noise won’t be a disturbance. The neighbors aren’t close and there’s a buffer of trees separating them from the house, anyway. Looks like a great place for kids to run and play in a safe environment, yet still close to public transportation and the convenience of Dover Plains.
