Five-Figure Friday: Cairo Barn + Storefront, $25,000

474 old rt 23 cairo ny

What would you do with a huge 19th century barn that comes with a tiny storefront? We’re not sure, either, but we certainly love the look of it. The property is located between Cairo and Windham in Greene County. The storefront is 512 square feet, and the barn is 2,688 square feet. There are no photos of the interior of the barn. The one interior shot available was taken in the storefront (we think), but we would love to poke around inside both. Lot size is just over an acre.

Friday Fancy: Cairo Victorian + Swimming Hole, $995,000

Not much to see on the inside due to lack of photos, but the outside is the real eye-candy here, anyway. Imagine walking to your own private swimming hole and waterfall on a hot summer’s afternoon. We know it’s hard to think about when it’s 10 below outside, but the warm weather will be here eventually.

The rest of the two acres upon which it is ensconced is quite beautiful, too, with greenery, flowers, and gardens. As for the house, it was built in 1890, 3000 square feet large, and claims to have a “commercial kitchen”, but it’s not evident from the one photo of it. Frankly, we’re mostly seeing clutter, but for the price, the interior is probably nicer than we think.

Contemporary in Cairo, $285,000

For our final property of the week in Cairo, we had a lot to choose from: More cheapies, some farmhouses, investment properties, multi-family units. But ultimately, we chose to go with a Goldilocks house. It’s reasonably, priced, new, on 2 acres, well-landscaped, spacious inside (2500 square feet, 3 beds/2 baths plus an additional room that could be converted into an additional bedroom), tidy, and located on a cul-de-sac. No need to renovate, repaint, plant, construct, or redo. It’s a safe bet. Or, in the immortal words of Goldilocks, juuuuust right.

Upstater Destinations: The Streets of Cairo

We have to admit: There’s not a whole lot to do in Cairo in the wintertime, as most of the best activities involve getting outside to experience the Catskill Park trails and scenery, going swimming in a hidden swimming hole (we’ve been known to use the satellite option on GMAP to scout a few), or visiting one of the many Greene County farm stands in order to taste some of the best seasonal wares in the state. Yes, yes, we know. There’s skiing at Hunter, which isn’t far away. But we know all about Hunter.

So what does one do when the Shingle Kill runs cold, when the breezes chill to the bone and toss the brittle leaves around the streets of a quiet Catskill Mountain town? Well, if you’re like us, you bundle up, grab your camera, and start snapping.

Here are some of our favorite shots around Cairo.

Calvary Episcopal Church, Cairo

Cairo World War Memorial

Greene County Mental Health, Cairo

So, what are your recommendations for winter fun in the Catskills? Where’s your favorite place to hit the slopes, go skating, sledding, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, dog-sledding, ice-fishing, or Polar Bear Diving? Tell us in the comments!
