Friday Fancy: Barryville Farmhouse + Compound, $950,000

38 corkscrew road barryville ny

The listing states that this farmhouse/compound is currently being operated as a B&B, but why not just move all of your family friends in so you never have to leave? There’s plenty of room: 9 bedrooms, an additional house, a caretaker’s apartment, and 50 acres should provide enough room to run away and hide should you need some alone time. Besides, if you split a $950,000 compound 10 ways or more, you’re looking at a straight-up bargain. Bring your horses, too. There’s a 12-stall horse barn on the property, as well as other outbuildings. Bucolic? You’re soaking in it.

Barryville Cape Cod, $139,000

476 route 55 barryville ny

Such an sweet wee Cape on an acre of woodsy land in Barryville. Of course, “wee” is a bit of a relative word. Some of us think the square footage, over 1,700, is downright roomy, compared to the cramped quarters in which we’ve been known to reside.

Here’s what we like about it: Based on the pictures alone, almost everything. Not nuts about the aqua green carpeting in the sunken living room, but for less than $140,000, we’ll accept it. Plus, it comes with a couple of out-buildings and it’s located close to a lake.

Upstater Destinations: Minisink Battleground Park

minisink battleground park

The historical marker at the Minisink Battleground in Sullivan County relates a rather sad tale of battlefield casualties sustained by militia men during the American Revolution. In the summer of 1779, Mohawk war chief and British army captain Joseph Brant and his cadre of Tories and Mohawks ransacked the Minisink Ford settlement, comprised of New York and New Jersey militia men who hoped had to get the drop on Brant and his soldiers. No such luck. The battle was a bloodbath, and the remains of the dead were eventually relocated to Goshen and buried there.

Battle of Minisink Marker

While Goshen is the home of the mass grave site, the actual battlefield is located in Barryville, and is now the site of a 57-acre park with pavilions and walking trails where folks can enjoy a lazy afternoon stroll or partake in a picnic. Minisink Battlefield Memorial Park is a great place for those who like their recreational activities with a side of historic bloodshed, and we mean that in the best possible way. We are endlessly fascinated by upstate New York’s role in American history, and we find ourselves intrigued at the very glimpse of the iconic blue and yellow of a site marker.

Minisink Battlefield Memorial Park is located at the end of Route 168/Minisink Road, just east of 97 and the Delaware River. Make sure you take the time to visit the Interpretive Center to learn more about the battle and the area’s indigenous vegetation and wildlife.

Catskill Farms Barn in Barryville, $399,000

100 crawford road barryville ny

When it comes to properties in Barryville, it doesn’t get much better than a house built by builder, contractor, and Upstater commentator Charles Petersheim, owner of Catskill Farms. Frankly, we were a little surprised to find one on the market. Don’t people live in Catskill Farms houses forever?

This one’s a beaut: Wide plank floor boards, cast iron radiators, tons of windows so natural light is abundant. The stone fireplace is a nice touch, too. Great house if you’re looking for something countrified and rustic but still refined. Lot size is over five acres plopped down in the middle of the trees off Crawford Road.

You can see more of Mr. Petersheim’s work here.
