Athens Victorian, $298,500

3 s church street athens ny

Lots of bold choices in this cira-1875 Victorian in the village of Athens. Even if you’re not a fan of thick, black horizontal stripes on the walls, there’s plenty about this house that we can all appreciate, starting with the gingerbread detailing on the exterior to the whitewashed wide plank floors. This isn’t the only house in town that will make you catch your breath. Athens, located along the Hudson River in Greene County, is fairly bursting at the seams with attractive properties. Bump it up to the top of your must-visit queue.

RoTW: Athens Brick Federal, $1,500/mo.

1 third street athens ny

The city of Hudson might get all the play in the media, but we adore its counterpart directly across the river, the village of Athens. So many great old buildings there, including this charming brick Federal-style that’s up for rent. We love that the interior has been preserved like a time capsule with the original circa-1824 floors, fireplaces (albeit sealed off), fixtures, and trim. The exposed brick in the kitchen caught our fancy, as well. If you go upstairs, you get a killer view of both the Hudson River and the other great properties surrounding this one. It even includes a garden patio. Renter pays utilities as well as a $750 broker’s fee. Available immediately.

Country Living Does Upstate

02-more-is-more-kitchen-1013-lgn-6682896

Did anyone make it to the Country Living Fair earlier this year? One of the offerings there was the chance to meet its editors. But if you missed that, at least you can peek into their homes. Country Living has a spread on the editor-in-chief’s house in Athens, which reinforces the style we’ve been seeing all over upstate New York and which we like to call rustic chic: lots of wood and white, an almost saturnine gun metal gray brightened with jute and rattan and other earthy fibers. We love these pics, though of course are now feeling glum about our own home, which is so absent of gun metal gray. More photos after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

Rental of the Week: Athens Livery House, $1,500/month

4 n vernon street athens

Hankering to live in the Greene County village of Athens for the next six months? Now’s your chance. This lover-ly livery house is just a hop and skip from the waterfront, right where the Schoharie Turnpike meets the village. Comes with the furnishings you see here, plus media, washer/dryer, gas grill outside, and it’s walking distance to lots of local stuff. So let’s see what we’ve got here: Good location, house is nicely appointed, and it’s in a town that’s walkable not far from the water. Sounds like a winner. Is it summer yet?
