If we attempted to innumerate all of the Memorial Day weekend events starting on Friday, we’d be here until next Memorial Day. Instead, we decided to pick three fun happenings we think you will enjoy as you officially kick off the unofficial start of summer.

Opening Day of the Saugerties Farmers Market, May 25, Main Street next to the Kiersted House (GMAP)

The Saugerties Farmers Market is always a good time, even if you don’t buy anything (and you will, believe us). And the folks who run it sure know how to start things off with a bang every year. This time around, the Farmers Market will have live music, chef’s demos, a kids’ arts and crafts table, and free soil testing by Cornell Cooperative Extension. And we all know that nothing says summer fun like free soil testing! Check out the list of upcoming events and the full roster of vendors on the Saugerties Farmers Market website.

Hudson Berkshire Food and Wine Festival, May 25-26, Columbia County Fairgrounds (GMAP)

If the Farmers Market just isn’t enough delicious, locally grown food for you, head up to Columbia County to the Food and Wine Festival. Whether you’re hankering for a hunk of spicy cheese from Worldling’s Pleasure or a bubbly glass of Blanc de Blanc from the Hudson-Chatham Winery, you’re going to find something yummy. Rhinebeck Antiques Fair, May 25-26, Dutchess County Fairgrounds (GMAP)

Had enough to eat? Now spend what’s left of your money on cool, old stuff. With more antiquities dealers than you can shake a stick at, the Rhinebeck Antiques Fair is a popular event around these parts. Parking is free for this event, but leave your pup at home since the fairgrounds are a pet-free zone. Find out everything that’s going on those two days on the antiques fair website.

A little birdy tipped us off to this place. Said birdy has been watching the price fall on it for the last year, and has some words to recommend it: “It’s such a great house right on the Esopus, about three steps from the Saugerties swimming beach…and it has an outdoor shower!”

Some of those are magic words (“outdoor shower”=heart melting), especially to those of us who, well, didn’t know there was a swimming beach in Saugerties. It has a lovely garden, and the listing says views, though we don’t see them. You’ll notice an absence of kitchen photos, too, which keeps us from saying, “Yes, we’ll take it, sight unseen.” Let us see the sight!

It’s three beds and three baths, packed into 1,122 square feet, and very close to the new luxury hotel in town, in case you’re interested in a job there. Something nice about Saugerties: folks are investing in it. What do you think of the price? Looks like they very reluctantly dropped below $230,000. It was listed over a year ago at $250,000.

For those of you seeking a little density with your upstate New York real estate, a little community along with your country, we’ve had word that the Cantine’s Island Cohousing community, on a little peninsula in Saugerties, has a spot.

There are 18 households now — and more on the way — fronting the Esopus Creek. Cohousing is like a mix between a kibbutz and an NYC co-op: some meals together, decisions made in common, but you have your own place and, you know, your own job and such — no one has to go milk the cow before morning coffee. Or perhaps think of it as a modern day bungalow colony, for all seasons and without the Saturday night entertainment.

Next Wednesday is Halloween, and the kids will have their fun that night. As for this weekend, though, call a babysitter, because it’s all about the grown-ups. Here are a few adult-only parties we know of, some of these we’ve even attended and lived to tell the tale.

Palenville, Greene County: The Fernwood Restaurant is throwing their annual Halloween bash with music provided by local faves VOODELIC. The band goes all out with a blacklight show for the party, and it is quite a scene. The Fernwood is the perfect Halloween venue, too. Located on a dead-end road, the old Victorian in which it’s located has tons of spooky, dark corners in which to poke around. Festivities are Saturday, October 27th starting at 9:30. And if you have a little too much liquid fun, the Fernwood offers free rides home. No excuses! GMAP

Saugerties, Ulster County: New World Home Cooking has one of the most raucous and fun Halloween parties in the area. There’s always a theme, and this year, it’s come as your favorite rock star, dead or alive. Cash prizes for costumes in various categories. Be warned: It’s a mob scene. A fun mob scene, sure, but expect to wait on your drink at the bar for quite some time. And wear comfortable shoes, because you will dance. A lot. Fun kicks off at 9:30 TONIGHT. GMAP

Kingston, Ulster County: The guys at BSP in uptown Kingston have been working hard to transform the lounge into one of the best live music venues around. And they’ve done a great job. You can check it out at their party, which is Saturday night, October 27th, 10pm. Come in costume, and the cover is $3. Skip the costume and pay $10. So…come in costume. GMAP

Washingtonville, Orange County: Here’s a party we’ve never been to, but the location seems like such a great place to have a Halloween Ball, we thought we should include it. Brotherhood Winery’s Halloween Ball is TONIGHT at 8pm, and it’s a pricy one ($45/ticket), but the ticket is all-inclusive, so you might end up saving some money on booze. GMAP

Love it or hate it, one thing is for sure: It’s different. And we also had no idea this place existed, which is surprising, given that we drive Route 212 from Saugerties to Woodstock at least 4 times a week. Just when you think you know a town. This house was designed by Ben Ryuki Miyagi, and you can see more examples of his work here.

In spite of the fact that the level of whimsy in the exterior might be a bit inaccessible for some, the interior is pretty sweet. Very clean, bright, and adaptable. Another bonus: It’s next door neighbors with New World Home Cooking, just a few steps away. Living in a work of art is relatively reasonable at $1,100/ month, and this ad we found on craigslist gives a handy-dandy breakdown of what one could expect pay in utilities.

We think this is perfectly located between the Thruway and Woodstock — not in the thick of the tie-dyes and not too close to the whooshing cars.

The adorable factor is undeniable in this dollhouse-like pad, which has a deck and sits on 1.4 acres and was just built last year. We would personally like to make some adjustments to the insides, adjusting the light fixtures and making the kitchen worthy of what you expect from looking at the outside.

It has one bed, one bath and 790 square feet. We suspect it came from a kit, right?

It was really only a matter of time before this happened in the Hudson Valley…and we couldn’t be more psyched about it. They’ve certainly saved us the trouble of driving around to hit these places, since they will be corralled at Fiber Flame Studio for our convenience. If you haven’t yet experienced Yum Yum Noodle Bar’s tasty soups, or Pippy’s, a very fine hot doggery, indeed, you definitely need to make yourself available from 4-10pm on October 19th for this free festival. We just wish these guys were amongst the line-up. And these guys, too.

There are lots of 18th century stone houses in Saugerties; it’s one of the reasons we like the town so much. This one might not be as pretty as some of the others, but then again, most of the others aren’t sitting pretty on 30 acres of land. Some of the interior looks amazing and could be left alone, like the magnificent study with the built-in shelves, exposed beams, and fire place (although we might considering re-painting in a lighter shade). But we would take a sledgehammer to that row of cupboards above the counterspace separating the kitchen from the eating area, and we’d rip up those pea-green carpets in the living room. And we’ll leave it up to you to guess how we feel about the floral wallpaper in the bedrooms.

Okay, that makes it seem like there’s a lot of work to be done here. But the land is lovely and close (but definitely not walking distance) to the village, as well as the Lazy Swan Resort (definitely walking distance) with their rolling golf courses and impressive array of dining options.

Looking for a way to earn enough money over the summer so that you don’t have to work over the winter? This might be your opportunity right here. We’ve noticed that Stella’s Station (housed in a former garage) in the village of Saugerties is packed whenever the weather is warm, so the clientele is already established. Property includes a bar with outdoor seating and an ice cream parlor. Listing says sale of the seasonal establishment includes everything except the name. Also includes the rental property next door, which is currently a pet supply store. It’s certainly in a great location. You can’t really avoid it if you’re coming into Saugerties from the south taking Route 9w. And hey, who doesn’t like ice cream and booze?
