The Watershed Post has a great roundup of where to dine, or buy supplies, for turkey day. There are Thanksgiving pop-up markets, farm-raised turkeys (act fast, though), bags of winter roots veggies from local farms, and special-order pies. Get the full scoop here.

Winter Farmers’ Markets in the Hudson Valley and Catskills

Fear not, locavores. You don’t have to sacrifice either your morals or your good taste when winter comes. Many — in fact most — of your favorite farmers’ markets offer winter versions, stocked with “storage vegetables” (gourds and dry beans, etc), as well as preserved foods from jams to pickles. And, of course, they offer the socializing, too.

Winter farmers’ markets in upstate New York tend to be held less frequently and for fewer hours, so be sure to check before you load up on reusable shopping bags and hop into your snow tire-d car. After the jump, a fairly complete list of your winter options, including those in New Paltz, Pine Island and Millerton.

Upstater Destinations: Hudson Valley Restaurant Week Nov. 4-17

102_0652

We had the opportunity to attend the Hudson Valley Restaurant Week preview at Millbrook Vineyards and Winery this week, and it was everything we anticipated from one of the prettiest vineyards this side of the Hudson River (by this side, we mean the east side over in Dutchess County). The fall colors were popping on the hillside, and the golden vine leaves provided a bold backdrop to the Cabernet Franc grapes that were ripe for picking. There, all the participants gathered under the big tent in order to try some fine local food and drink, provided by Sprout Creek Farm, Acorn Hill Farm, Black Dirt Distillery, Millbrook Vineyards and Winery, Quattro’s Farm, Manhattan Beer, Hudson Valley Skin Care, Irving Farm Coffee Roasters, Harney & Sons, and Red Barn Produce. Whew! That’s quite a list, and they put on quite spread with everything from fine cheeses to wood-fired pizza to apple pie to wine to moonshine and applejack. The event also included grape harvesting/smooshing.

As usual, there are a multitude of restaurants participating in this year’s Restaurant Week (November 4-17), which, of course, falls right around the time of the harvest. Make sure you check out the long list of eateries and book yourself a table. There’s bound to be something for everyone, no matter what your taste buds are craving. Meanwhile, take a gander at some photos we took of the event after the jump.

The Relocators: Obercreek 2014 CSA Signup

Obercreek CSA

As I’ve written about a few times in our blog, Mark and I were members of the Obercreek Farm CSA this year. We actually purchased a half share where we picked up from the CSA every other week as opposed to every week.

It’s been lovely and we’ve had many great meals from the contents of those food share pickups. But alas, all good things come to an end; there are only two more pickups in the month of October and we’ll be done for the season. Read the rest of this entry »
