Car-Free Upstate: Washingtonville Fixer-Upper, $89,850

43 east main street washingtonville ny

The village of Washingtonville is in Orange County, situated alongside the Moodna Creek. This 4 bedroom house also overlooks the creek, but with that perk comes the risk of flooding, which is high with this property. However, we love the look of it: Those bright blue shutters, spacious backyard, exposed brick fireplace in the living room, and plank floors. Listings says it needs work, and the price is so low, we’re wondering if the work that needs to be done has to do with flood damage. The house is about a five minute walk to the Shortline bus, which stops there every weekday morning and will get you to the city in about 2 hours, as well as other stuff around the village.

Newburgh Urban Market Coming this May

urban market

This is just one of many exciting things in the offing, not just in Newburgh but in…well, we’ll tell you about that other thing tomorrow. Meanwhile, the Newburgh Urban Market is coming! The first date set for the new outdoor market is May 31st. Newburgh Restoration mastermind/ultimate purveyor of Newburgh renovation porn/illustrious Upstater contributor Cher Vick hipped us to the good news, and they need vendors. From Vick: “The market will be catering to vendors who sell: Vintage and antique items, food trucks, farmers, crafts and handmade items, vintage furniture and housewares, potted and fresh cut plants. Vendor stall spaces are 10X10. Interested parties may go to www.newburghurbanmarket.com to fill out a vendor registration form.” Did you get that, crafty readers? Sell your stuff at the Newburgh Urban Market, which will be held at Liberty Street next to Washington’s HQ (GMAP).  Meanwhile, the rest of us non-vendors will start saving our couch change and marking our calendars. Need more dirt? Email newburghurbanmarket@gmail.com for more information.

Destinations: Weekend of Magic in Sugarloaf, 3/14-3/16

david london

At the intersection of magic and Surrealism, we’ll find David London. The Baltimore-based magician incorporates the elements of Surrealism that delve deep into the hidden depths of the psyche and combines them with the whimsy and mystery of illusion to create a singular type of magic act. Intrigued? Confused? If the answer to those questions is “yes”, then you might be interested in London’s Weekend of Magic, March 14-16, at the Seligmann Center for the Performing Arts in Sugar Loaf (GMAP). The Seligmann Center is named for renowned Surrealist artist Kurt Seligmann, and it’s the perfect venue for London to expose audiences to his unique brand of magic. You can find out more about David London here in this Chronogram article. London’s Weekend of Magic consists of three separate events: On Friday and Saturday nights, he’ll be presenting “Magic Outside the Box”. Tickets to this show are $30 for VIP front-row seats, $20 for general admission, and $15 for students, artists, seniors, or “wizards” (scroll to the bottom of the ticket page to view info on how to get the discount). The Adventure to the Imagi Nation Family Show is scheduled for Saturday afternoon and is free. On Sunday, London will be conducting a workshop on magic and Surrealism. Those tickets are $25.

Tuxedo Park Mid-Mod, $359,000

32 hospital road tuxedo park ny

We don’t know much about Tuxedo Park in southern Orange County, but we know a snazzy mid-century modern when we see one. This one was built in 1957 and is less than half a mile from the Tuxedo Metro North station and the Shortline bus. It’s also uphill from the train station, which might make that schlep a little less desirable. Good thing you can arrange for a cab ahead of time. Anyway, the house is on a half-acre surrounded by woods, and according to the listing, it retains lake rights to Wee Wah Lake. It has two kitchens, a big stone fireplace in the living room, wood floors, big windows, and a wet bar. We wish the living room furniture came with it because whoa. Swanky.
