Great looking house. We would love to see it returned to a state of elegance.

The lot size is small, but the house is just steps from the Andes Rail Trail, so claustrophobia sufferers need only hit the road in order to stretch their legs and get close to nature.

Lovers of the Catskills and beer enthusiasts rejoice: Saturday, June 8th marks the 5th Annual American Beer Fest at the Andes Hotel. The whole event looks like a hoot, with lots of local breweries involved, including Ommegang, Anchor Steam, Itaca Brewery, Goose Island Brewery, and lots more.

For the $25 price of admission, you get to drink as much beer as you want, all afternoon between 2pm and 7pm. This would be a good event to bring a designated driver with you, and all they have to do is throw $5 toward the band (the Jack Grace Band, BTW) in order to get in.

It’s also the perfect opportunity to check out the very cool-looking Andes Hotel, which has a restaurant with a menu loaded with lots of local stuff, not to mention a tavern with a respectable selection of brews on tap. Have you been? Looks like the perfect Catskills laid-back hangout to us.

Sometimes, it pays to do a little extra looking for a property on different sites. While the pictures on the official listing website were only so-so, we found some photographs on Realtor.com that do this picture-book pretty, idyllic farmstead in Andes some justice. That big old barn on the property is so tantalizing. What would we do with it? The interior of the main house is bright with wood plank floors, cool detailing on the original moldings, and it looks cozy around the corner fireplace. Property includes an itty-bitty stream in the front yard.

Knotty pine entry #2: a four-bed, three-bath, 2,900-square-foot contemporary with mountain views. Again, for those who cotton to white plaster walls, this might not be the place. And we’re not in love with the kitchen countertops. But the exteriors are enticing, aren’t they? And it has lots of spaces for visitors, including a library. Note the wet bar and the fireplace. Haters of knotty pine, be forewarned: there’s a lot of it in the current selection of Andes, NY listings. But lovers of views, ponds and affordability, well, you can rejoice, for there’s plenty of that around, too.

Those latter three ingredients are in full swing here at this two-bed, one-bath, 900-square foot contemporary, set on the town’s famous Dingle Hill. It’s got a fireplace, a pond, a deck and a lovely sight of mountains on which to meditate. Is it small? Well, yeah, by country standards. But we don’t do enough celebrating of the good old fashioned cabin around here. Actually, this is more of a new fashioned cabin. Set on almost five acres.

Many have written in to extol the virtues of this town of 1,300, high in the Western Catskills. Andes is well-stocked with charm, with glorious houses along the main drag: impressive Italianates, grand Queen Annes. It’s surrounded by farms, and feels marvelously far away from it all, though one wonders what sustains the place besides agriculture and tourism — or is that enough? The town prides itself on its history — its past as a throbbing hub of saw and grist mills, its proliferation of sheep and dairy farmers — but also on its connection to the rest of New York State, and to the present. “Though we are tucked away in the remote foothills of the western Catskill Mountains,” they write, “there’s nothing frozen in amber about us.”

For tourists, there’s plenty to please if you’re looking for fresh air and quiet, plus an afternoon of shopping: art galleries, antique shops, a café and a country store. The heartbeat of the town comes from the Andes Hotel, an inn and restaurant that serves both seasonal fare and free popcorn: it ain’t fancy here, but it’s extremely comfortable. This is not even a one stoplight town. It’s a one blinking yellow light town, which is a big part of it’s draw. Will your cell phone work here? Probably not. Can you find some wifi? Probably yes. Could you find relaxation here? Heck yeah.
