We won’t go so far as to say that this is the perfect Hudson Riverfront Victorian, but it is pretty with lots of drool-worthy aspects: Ornate gingerbread detailing on the front porch, plank floorboards on the  second floor, mahogany trim, a little red barn, in-ground pool, and stunning views. The listing says it’s great for commuters because it’s five minutes from the Poughkeepsie train station. Maybe if you were taking a bullet train to get there. It’s actually more like 10 minutes away, but still, not too bad. Oh, and did we mention that it includes a one-bedroom apartment on the third floor?

This property is a little outside of what we usually write about on Car-Free Wednesdays, but look at it! Not only is this circa-1869 church one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city of Hudson, with its grand spires and remarkable stonework, it’s also an incredible recording studio. Long story short, it’s 7,000 square feet of music-nerd heaven, and you could technically live in it, since there’s a kitchen and a bathroom. We certainly would. What a beauty. Plus, it’s less than a mile from the Hudson Amtrak station. See? Car-Free, after all. The GMAP isn’t quite right: The church is actually on the corner of Route 9G and N. 6th Street.

Spectacular river views, indeed, but we couldn’t help but wonder what it sounds like when a train goes by late at night. Is it loud? Would it wake us up if we lived here? Would it drive us nuts during the day, too? Regardless, it’s a great, solid house with lots of character, although it might need some cleaning up a bit, especially around the yard. And it could be a Car-Free contender, except that it’s a long way from anything other than the Manitou Metro North station: The nearest grocery store is several miles away. But if you like to hide out among nature, with just the Hudson as your companion, this could be the place to do it. Located on a full acre.

Such an adorable Colonial on Lake Louise Marie. Price-wise, it’s on the steeper side of what we’ve seen in Rock Hill, but at least it looks like it doesn’t need any updating. Loving all the windows and French doors inside, and the landscaping is pretty idyllic. The listing says that it comes with a treehouse. We wish there were some photos of that! Property includes two docks, and the lot size is nearly a half-acre, which is practically enormous compared to most of these Rock Hill lake front properties.

It’s been quite sometime since we found ourselves drooling over the concept of joinery, and yet, here we are. The master carpenter who built this house, which is located in the private neighborhood of Pyn Ayres, is the one currently occupying it, and there’s so much about this house that works for us: The craftsman-like dark wood interior with 250 year old oak trim (so says the listing), the doors, the staircase, the master bath. Listing also says it has radiant heat. If we were to try to think up a new(ish) construction, it would probably look a lot like this. Lot size is close to 6 acres with a pond.

The fact that it’s at the end of a dead-end road essentially promises privacy, and we like that you seen nothing but nature from the windows.

It’s a tad pricey for a 1.5 acre lot and 2,800 square feet with 3 beds/2 baths, but it’s still nice to look at with some attractive features like beamed ceilings in the living room, a fire place, some built-in shelves, and a great screened-in porch. Just a stone’s throw from the Edna St. Vincent Millay Museum, just in case you need a little creative inspiration to rub off via proximity.

Hmm…almost makes us want to change our career to innkeeper.
