Where Does Upstate New York Begin?

We ask partly because a reader recently responded in a prickly fashion to our discerning between western, central and upstate NY, and also because a recent article asks if Yonkers qualifies as upstate. That is, when Gov. Cuomo says he wants to locate three revenue- and job-generating racinos upstate, does Yonkers qualify?

City and State NY wrote: ”Yonkers City Council President Chuck Lesnick made the semantic argument that it should be considered. ‘My first question was, “Where is upstate?” Lesnick said after Cuomo’s State of the State address.

‘One could say anything north of Yankee Stadium is upstate. In fact, when Phil Rizutto used to call those long home runs from Reggie Jackson for the Yankees, he would say, “He hit that ball upstate!” Anything north of right field is upstate.’

We leave it to you. Does economic development upstate include Westchester?

Upstate begins where the metro North commuter rail ends. I.e. Poughkeepsie.

The question is, where does it end?

Upstate begins in Kingston where the Thruway circle is. When you leave that area, you leave taxi service, some cell service and other ameninities you may be use to from the city. The Route 28 corridor is the trail of upstate and the “forgotten land of peace”. They use to say “Go west young man”, now just head past Kingston for your adventure. Great buys on property, great people, and sanity from “THE CITY”.

Once you are over the Tappan Zee…. Or really, anything North of Rockland and Westchester.

Anything north of 96th street is upstate, I’d say.

I agree that Upstate starts where Metro North ends. We have friends in the North Country who feel It begins in Warrensburg and friends in Westchester who feel they are Upstate. It is a very relative term.

Sorry, upstate begins where the Bronx ends.

upstate is a state of mind.

a chill sense of being that doesn’t concern itself where it’s edges begin or end, so long as aggro-douchiness stays away at a comfortable distance.

  9. To quote a New Yorker humor piece from a few years ago, Upstate’s boundaries are: NoHaSoCa (North of Harlem, South of Canada)

Upstate NY is anything North of where you are located…

I consider anything above Westchester County as UPSTATE New York. I’m in Albany, NY

There is official word about where Upstate New York State begins, according to the New York State Department Of Motor Vehicles:

The New York Metropolitan Area (NYMA) includes: Bronx County, Kings
County (Brooklyn), New York County (Manhattan), Queens County, Richmond
County (Staten Island), Suffolk County, Nassau County, Westchester
County and Rockland County. The other 53 counties in NYS are outside
    the NYMA.

What fees do motorists pay for the NYVIP inspection?
In the Upstate Area, the total fee for a NYVIP safety and OBDII
emissions inspection is $21. In the NYMA, the total fee for a NYVIP
safety and OBDII emissions inspection is $37.
Statewide, the total fee for a NYVIP safety and low-enhanced emissions
    inspection is $21.

So anything north of Westchester County = Upstate New York.

I always thought upstate began around the New Paltz exit – if it’s a reasonable commute to NYC, it’s not upstate yet. Where does upstate end? Canada.
